So I've spent the last two weeks analyzing my relationship with E-Bomb. She has no idea what's been on my mind because, well - Get over it. Stop analyzing it. There's nothing wrong here. Maybe I haven't come to any real conclusions or solutions to my little problem, but it has given me insight on moving forward and the future of our relationship.
I am saddened by the fact that things have to change, something has to give and I have to be the one to initiate it. She is too stubborn, she is set in her ways and like I've mentioned before, I don't have the energy or patience or even the will to change her. She's made her choices, she's established who she is in the 50+ years she has spent on this earth. Now it's time for me to make my choices and to establish who I am because I'm already 30 years behind.
The one conclusion all of us have come to is that deep down, E-Bomb is sullen because she's lonely. But that won't change if she doesn't change (We have all noted at one time or another that she's not going to find anyone if she doesn't become a little more open minded and she has proven time and time again that she refuses to.)
If she wants to find a companion to live out the rest of her time with, then it's on her. I'm putting down the burden of trying to explain how things work these days. I can't help that she spent half of her life married to my father and that she endured more emotional abuse than I want to even think about. They had been separated for four years and Pop has been gone for three. She claims she is ready to move on with her life, but her feet are encased in emotional concrete. If her own children, her own siblings or her own friends can't help set her free, then obviously it's left up to her. We've done all we can.
All I want is to see my mother happy. She can claim her life is grand until she's blue in the face, she can continue to hide her true feelings and emotions all she wants, but we all know she feels something lacking. And there's nothing we can do about it. I cringe every time I hear her say to a friend, "Don't they know anyone who's single?" I cringe because even if they did, that person would not live up to her standards. No one can, and until she realizes that things are a lot different these days - that people as a whole have adapted to changes in society and have learned to accept the bad along with the good, she's going to remain lonely. Her knight in shining armor is not going to knock on the door on a weeknight while she's sitting at home.

A Boy & His Na-Na
Something that slapped my perspective back into (some kind of) focus was when my nephew came into my bedroom early last Saturday morning. I heard my door open and sensed him standing at the edge of my bed, where I was burrowed under a mountain of blankets. I peeked at the clock and saw my alarm wasn't to go off for 45 more minutes. Instead of getting out of bed, I motioned for him to climb in with me and I'll be damned, he did.
He tucked his little 4 year old self with me into the cave of pillows I had created and fell right back asleep. His quiet little snores lulled me back to sleep as well, and when my alarm went off he didn't budge. I got up but he kept on snoring so I let him be.
How can you not be reminded that there is no secret to life or happiness, it just is, when you look down at the little one tucked safely under the covers next to you? Everything else seems almost painfully insignificant when you look down at that little one who has latched onto your heart with a death grip, realizing he looks up to you as his Na-Na, his aunt that will always love him and protect him. He is sleeping in your arms because he trusts you, he knows you will never hurt him, that, in essence, you will always be there.
Whenever I dare to let myself think that I might not ever actually get the chance to have my own children, I quickly divert my thoughts to Nico, my crazy, energy-charged, blue-eyed "baby." (I know, I know, he's not a baby anymore - he reminds me all the time.) My love for this little boy transcends everything I thought I knew. The other day I remarked to my mother, "I never knew I could love something as much I love that little stinker. It blows my mind sometimes."
People might think it's strange, and if they do, I feel sorry for them and hope that one day they experience a relationship like the one I have with Nico.
"Wait, your nephew's separation anxiety is just as bad with you as it is with his own parents?"
Sometimes, yes, like when he needs "one more huggie" 60 times when I'm about to leave for work or going out with friends.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Just Love Yourself, Dammit - If I Can Do It, So Can You
So of course I take part in social media like everyone else on the planet. My personal favorite is Twitter, but of course I have Facebook and Tumblr accounts as well.
Since my breakup I've backed off from cruising my various timelines, mostly Facebook, for a couple of reasons. One is I don't feel like seeing random people's happiness splayed all over the internet - unless it's a dear, dear friend or family member.
The other reason I've backed off is that I have become painfully aware all of these memes and quotes and blog posts, etc, that either pertain to my situation or make me think of him - they cross my line of sight, I read them, and it hurts. It really, really hurts. It takes all the willpower I've got to not forward them along to him.
One thing that is getting under my skin lately is all of the "I-may-be-difficult-but-I'm-worth-it" type quotes that are plastered everywhere. Why? Because it shouldn't have to be like that, and most of the time, it isn't. I used to think that of myself, but then I learned it simply isn't true. I am not a difficult person. My friends and everyone else that I love, the ex included, are not difficult people. But it doesn't make them worth my time any less. Yes, I love them all in spite of their idiosyncrasies and whatnot, but those things do not make them "difficult" or "weird" or "crazy." It disheartens me to think that we've become the "I-deserve-to-be-loved-even-though" generation. It should not be that way. We all deserved to be loved, plain and simple.
Maybe the mindset should be changed to "I-deserve-to-be-loved-BECAUSE-I-am-difficult." Or better yet, "I-am-NOT-difficult-and-am-STILL-worth-it."
Another thought that saddens me is that the people who truly feel this way, who feel that they are not easy to get along with or have so many internal issues that it makes them hard to accept being loved, have obviously had someone in their past, or even present, that caused them to feel this way. Why do we do this to each other?
What if we were to all walk around with healthy amounts of self esteem? What if we all believed we are worth someone's time and someone's love? Wouldn't things be a lot different? I know that I wouldn't want to be with a person who felt so awful about themselves. The best I could give them would be the love and support of a good friend.

| It's heartbreaking to know people think this way. |
I have all the reason in the world to think I don't deserve to be loved. I have all the reason in the world right now to believe that I am difficult, I am strange, I am neurotic and downright unlovable. But you know what? I don't believe those things. Because I believe something that trumps all of those things -
I am an amazing person.
I am beautiful, inside and out.
I am lovable.
I am downright fantastic and fuck you if you can't see that.
Emotional Unavailability Is Bullshit
I don't get it and I never will, I know that much. My life has become significantly less complicated since I've whittled down the number of lovers I have at any given time to a very, very small one. But that's not to say the ones I keep close don't throw me into a spin every once in a while. I've been played the "emotionally unavailable" card 4 times in the past year, and I just don't get it. I'm actually starting to think it's a cop out. It's easier than saying, I like you, but not enough to pursue something more significant with you.
The first time I was handed this line, I accepted it without too much hesitation, although I was somewhat devastated upon hearing it. Okay, you've got a lot of shit floating around in your head, I understand where you're coming from. I really can't blame you, thanks for your honesty.
The second time it came from the infamous Buzzard. Yeah, yeah, fuck you and your "issues." You figured it would just be easier to tell me that you were unable to give me what I needed out of a relationship as opposed to flat-out saying, "I don't want a girlfriend, I just want to fuck bitches." Because honestly honey, everybody knows at this point that that's all you care about. You don't have "issues," you're just a sleazy old man now that eventually no woman is going to want. Especially once your prick falls off.
The third time I got the line, I hadn't expected to feel the way I was starting to about the other person involved. We started out as casual lovers, and things escalated as we started spending more time together. I liked how he made me feel, how much fun we had together, and his happy-go-lucky approach to life. He was very attentive to my needs, respectful and honest with me. So I laid it out on the table for him, prepared for whatever he handed back to me. And of course, it was the same spiel. Okay, I understand work is kicking your ass and owning a business can stress you out to the max. Yes, it sucks that the last relationship you were in ended badly, but so did mine. It hasn't stopped me from being receptive when something better comes my way. But if you claim you like being with me, we can't deny how mind-blowing the sex is and that we both feel at ease with each other, yet you can't make room for me in your life, then there's nothing I can do about it. Thanks for your honesty. Time for me to move on.
The fourth time I heard this line, I was actually a little surprised. It came up in casual conversation, not in terms of, "This is what I want and this is what I think it should be," when referring to a relationship. I may feel as though I've been a little misled, but I'm not hurt, nor have I ever been hurt by this person. I looked straight at him and replied, "If I made myself emotionally unavailable, if I put up a wall and refused to ever let anyone in at all, I'd miss out on so much. Yes, it's risky, but my life has been enriched by the relationships I've had." I personally think you need to move on because you deserve better. I don't like the way she hurt you and I don't think you have any valid reasons for wanting her back other than the fact that you grew accustomed to her being around. I don't expect you to move right on to me, you need to do it for yourself. Whether or not I fit into your future is a moot point.
Maybe I feel this way because when my last full-blown, intent-to-marry, relationship ended, I was the one who dealt it the final blow. I made the decision to end it, I dropped the bomb and literally ran the other way. I cut off all communication, I didn't want anything from him, I left all kinds of shit at his house, which was returned to me one way or another through mutual friends without ever having to see each other face to face. I knew it was the only way.
These people who keep going back to the scene of the crime make me sick. No wonder you're miserable. No wonder you're cynical. No wonder you come to believe you are "emotionally unavailable." If my ex was able to rebuild the shambles I left his life in, then you can too. If I was able to walk away from Buzzard, then you can walk away from the person who poisons your very soul.
Fuck this being emotionally unavailable. I'm here to love everyone who crosses my path at different times, or all at the same time, what's it matter? These four specific experiences have only made me stronger and more aware of what it is I want out of life and out of love. To break it down,

- If I had put my guard up after I left my ex, I would have never started down the path of self discovery.
- If I hadn't gone through every bit of emotional trauma caused by Buzzard, I wouldn't be nearly as strong as I am today. I still wouldn't know that I deserve to be treated with respect, and telling Buzzard to fuck off was how I learned it.
- I know now that it's not the end of the world if a partner doesn't feel the same way I do. I've learned acceptance, and also that I can't control another human being's emotions. If they don't want the same things, then it's time to move on.
- It's all about balance. When my fourth experience with the E-U card came, I pretty much blew it off. I was only able to do so because the relationship I have with this person is something of an anomaly. We are equal parts friends and lovers, cut and dry. There's no using or being used because we both genuinely care about each other and have for a long time.
That's Funny, I Thought It Would Take More Bleach Than That
It's hard to clean up your act when at times it seems that the world is teeming with potential lovers. For a while there I made it my goal to turn all of the those potentials into actuals and was always surprised (sometimes amused as well,) by how easy it was. But I'm a little older now, I'm a little more mature, and I finally have a clearer idea as to what I want out of a relationship. Getting to this point wasn't easy, but I have no regrets. Everything I have done in the past I did fully aware of any repercussions that could result from my actions.
So the mess I had made of my love life is starting to sparkle, shiny and new, after taking a few gallons of bleach and a wire bristle scrub brush to it. The decision to do that didn't come from my want for something real, I made it as a result of discovering, "Hey girl, you need to respect yourself a little more. You can't live your life waking up in a different bed every morning or kicking a different man out of your's every night."
Do I miss those nights of sleazy, rock & roll debauchery fueled by alcohol and hormones? Sometimes. A lot actually. But the nice thing is knowing I can still have them without putting my mind, heart and body at risk.
Reaching for that bucket of bleach was not easy. I hesitated several times. And just because I finally did it doesn't mean that I'm a reformed bad girl in any way. I'm a bad girl at heart and always will be. It's just finding someone who enjoys being bad right along with me. Part of me thinks I found that in my Parkesburg Boy...

Turns Out This Month I'll Be Okay
I got two separate paychecks last week and was able to pay my bills, right before my cell phone was about to get shut off. Yeah, yeah, I need to budget my money better. I thought I had been, but as one of my dear friends said to me, "Holes can appear when you least expect it, and you'll get yourself out, I know you will." And I did without having to ask anyone for help, thank God. It was amazing how quickly my depression and anxiety lifted the second I signed on to my bank account and saw the deposits that had been made, one of which was much larger than I had anticipated.
So my plan is to do what every financial adviser tells us - make sure I have at least three months worth of bill payments stashed away, and if I'm really committed, four months with enough in my savings left over to have a comfortable little nest egg. It sounds simple, but if it was, I wouldn't have been in the position I was two weeks ago. So let's just take that as another wake-up call. Then next summer, I can lay around the pool, not work, not worry about collecting unemployment, not worry about my bills being paid, and use the paychecks I do get for the sporadic work I do in the summer to go party down in Dewey Beach.
Sounds like a plan to me.

Gimme Some Sugar, Baby, Part V
While my emotions were still in a constant state of panic and uproar the year I broke up with my first love, I experienced the second one night stand that would change my world forever. I was 24. It was the beginning of a long, arduous journey of a torrid love affair, full of treachery, infidelity, sex and more sex, (yes, I'll admit it, some of the best sex I've ever had,) heartbreak, mind-fuckery and self-discovery. If I had known that the first night I spent with this man would have shaped the woman I was to become three years later, would I still have done it? At this moment, the answer is simply, "I don't know."
He taught me more than I'd like to admit, about specific kinds of sex, about life, about the importance of honesty, about myself. He opened me up to entirely new worlds that I would not have discovered if it weren't for him, or I would have explored on my own and ended up hurt in more ways than I want to even think about.
To this day I am still attached to him, but on much less complicated terms. It's not easy to cast him into the sea of forgotten lovers when we know each other's minds and bodies all too well. When we know what makes each other tick. When we know what to do to make each other come and just how to do it. Right now I don't think I could even if I wanted to.
So we continue along as friends with benefits, sneaking around like we're in high school because of the drama that he seems to attract so well. At the moment, he's the only guy I have on speed-dial, and I'd rather be sleeping with him than going out and looking for quick fixes that won't mean anything the next morning.

Gimme Some Sugar, Baby, Part IV
My senior year of high school, and most of my first year of college, consisted of those meaningless one night stands. Sex was still new to me, but I learned early how to separate my heart from my cunt. The first one night stand that knocked me down for the count ended up being the first man I ever loved. We flirted and teased each other all throughout my senior year, the anticipation had built up immensely and we finally slept together for the first time the night before I moved away to college. I had just turned 18.
I was torn up over him for two years. Two years that were sprinkled with random meetings between us where we would hang out and we would fuck. I did my best to get involved with and/or sleep with other men just to forget about him. It took two years for him to realize how much he truly did care for me and we began building a life together the summer I graduated college. What had started out as physical attraction turned into an emotional connection and the sex got better before it got worse. We loved and learned about each others' bodies, he was the first guy I was comfortable enough with to let my guard down completely, and he was the first one to ever give me an orgasm.
The relationship lasted five years, which, in your early twenties, is equal to a lifetime. Unfortunately, towards the end of the fifth year, the ship started sinking, and I bailed.

Gimme Some Sugar, Baby, Part III
A one night stand has done everything from completely derail me off of the straight and narrow path I was already on to simply having been another ordinary event on any other ordinary day, like a handshake or hug from an old acquaintance whose path crosses mine in the grocery store. I've had my share of both types of encounters.
There have been those whose only purpose were means to an end, a few hours of pleasure with an otherwise complete stranger. There was the unspoken agreement that phone numbers need not be exchanged, each party fulfilled their purpose and both were free to go their separate ways. No damage done, cut and dry, no lifelong scarring need be inflicted. I may not remember names or faces, but I will always remember those little hiccups, albeit pleasurable and fun (usually,) ones I've participated in on my journey through life.
Then there have been those that turned into more, that have changed and shaped me into the woman I am now. Ones that knocked me on my ass and kept me going back for more.

Gimme Some Sugar, Baby, Part I
Currently reading. My favorite essay so far is called "Sex With A Stranger," written by Susan Cheever.
"If you are looking for love, sexual intimacy can be a shortcut. It is among the fastest ways to get to know another person. During sex, we literally and figuratively expose ourselves. We show physical parts that are usually kept covered; we display our private likes and dislikes. In its moments of unconscious response to physical pleasure, the body reveals a great deal of information: a need to dominate, a difficulty following suggestions, an inability to express desires. If we have trouble letting go or if we are painfully uncomfortable with how we look, it often shows up in the two-person drama of the sex act."
This little essay has inspired me to write about my experiences with one night stands. Stay tuned.
Decisions, Decisions
311 just added a show to their spring tour in Las Vegas. On February 19th, of course. Because that's the same day as Buckcherry in Philadelphia. And the same weekend my brother and sister in law decided to have the Mid-Winter Classic down at her parents' beach house.
It's not like I can afford to fly out to Vegas right now anyway. (When I say I don't regret anything I've done, like blowing my money on various trips and concerts around the country too much, too fast, it becomes a little more of lie every day.)
But going to see Buckcherry would be a lot less expensive than a night in Atlantic City. And flying to Vegas.
Good things come to those who wait though, right? To those with patience, and those who make a valiant effort to get their shit together, even though it's going to take a long time?
Hopefully.

Good things come to those who wait though, right? To those with patience, and those who make a valiant effort to get their shit together, even though it's going to take a long time?
Hopefully.
To Be [A Slut] Or Not To Be
From January 10, 2010

So my reputation has surpassed me. It took the most unsuspecting person to point it out, even though I subconsciously have been aware of this fact. Am I ready to settle down? I don't know. Am I having fun picking and choosing my sexual partners? I don't know anymore. Do I want to be the girl at my current watering hole that every guy has been with? I'm pretty sure I already am. However, that does not bother me much, because I knew from the second I walked into this place that it was highly doubtful a suitable mate would ever walk through the door.
I believe I am entering a new phase in my sexual journey. While I enjoy sex, and I love to experiment, is it really necessary for the number of people I have slept with to keep growing? I am becoming uneasy with adding to my track record. So I've made a pact with myself - no more new encounters for the time being. I'm not strapping on a chastity belt and throwing away the key by any means. I'm just starting to feel jaded by the one-nighters. There's not much satisfaction in the Liz Phair "Fuck and Run"-esque kick I've been on since my Ex and I split up. I've got enough cock in the arsenal to keep me in line, at least for the time being. There's Buzzard, HB, The Other Photographer, The Boy...
Maybe I will just start making them work a little harder at getting into these pants. Make them put forth a little more effort. While I am far from perfect, I still think I'm a pretty decent catch. I don't need a lobotomy to keep this pact; I can still trudge on with my aggressive personality, but there's a big difference in approaching someone I'm physically attracted to just to brush my hand against their crotch and approaching someone to strike up a conversation out of sheer intrigue.
Update: What the fuck was I thinking? I'm never going to run for president so do I really care about a reputation? I've replaced most of the FWBs that caused me strife with ones who DON'T. Last night I was talking with a girl at the bar and she said to me, "Why do you call yourself a slut? If you see something you want and you go after it, that doesn't make you a slut. It means you're a self-confident, powerful woman who knows what she wants." I raised my glass to her. Or my beer bottle. I can't remember.

Baby Steps
I've decided that my outlook on life needs an overhaul. This is going to be a long and painstaking process, but after much consideration and meditating on this fact, I've learned that there are things about me that need to change. I am not becoming the woman I want to be. I am not living up to my potential in any area of my life. I am letting my depression and anxiety get the best of me, and it is hindering spiritual and mental growth.
But it all starts with baby steps. Little changes I can make on a daily basis that may seem menial but will only pave the way to make bigger changes that will help me to become a better person and purge some of this negativity I have hanging over my head like a black storm cloud.
Baby steps. Like emptying the ashtray after no more than three cigarettes butts have accumulated in it.
Like getting my car's oil changed on a regular basis (if my finances allow.)
Setting my alarm a few minutes earlier in order to get to work on time not just most of the time, but all of the time.
Baby steps. Like keeping my desk relatively free of clutter.
I've already proven to myself that I can keep my checkbook balanced, stop after one or two beers, and turn down sex with someone I'm not even into.
There's going to be trials and tribulations along the way, and I have to keep this in mind. I will be tempted to drink myself into oblivion, and while that's okay for me every once in a while, it doesn't have to happen every time I go out. I may fall prone to the occasional one night stand, but I don't have to go out and seek one every night.
So it's all about baby steps. This is just the beginning.

Heavy Things, Part 3
I know that putting God first is essential in order to get my life on point. But is there anything you do, personally, if you've ever felt that you have forgotten to do so? I am struggling bigtime with getting my relationship with God back in line.
I never forget to put God first. I can forget everybody except God, because there have been times when all I had was God. Truth be told, all you ever really have is God. I mean you have to know that we are here for so much more than to "party, party, party...get wasted". There is so much more to your being here on this Earth now. You are here for a divine purpose. There's a reason you've been through all the trials and tribulations. If you woke up this morning, congratulations you have another chance. Thank God I was raised by a woman who stressed how significant it is to keep God on the front line of life. And this isn't about church either. This is about falling on your knees, right in your bedroom or standing in front of the mirror in the bathroom and just surrendering to that which is bigger than your issues.

My Version of College
I went to college at this tiny photography and graphic design school right outside of Philadelphia, in the Germantown area. It was a two year college where I received my associates degree in photography. I was accepted to the University of Delaware and West Chester as well, but I always knew I wanted to be some type of artist and photography was my thing.
Aside from the actual getting up and going to class part, we did some dumb shit during those years. The students lived in off-campus apartments amongst normal, law-abiding citizens, which wasn't always smooth sailing. My roommates and I made it work for the most part.
My first year I lived with Jess, who I met while still in high school because our dads worked together. We shared an apartment with Heidi, who was easy to get along with until the end of our second semester. Jess's boyfriend Jim stayed at the apartment often, but it didn't bother me even though her and I shared a bedroom. I think it was also because we were three 18-year-old girls living by ourselves in Germantown as well.
Art school is very different from "real college." A lot of interesting characters. Our apartment became Grand Central Station because we had the best pot. And tons of booze. I smoked enough pot that year to last me a lifetime. The first time we got Heidi to smoke with us she ended up with food poisoning, of course from the dinner I had cooked. You can imagine our horror at having to drive her to the emergency room while the three of us were high as a kite. We didn't know if she was having some sort of reaction to the pot, or the feta cheese chicken. She was throwing up everywhere and I remember making her hold a plastic grocery bag while she sat in the passenger seat of my car on the way to the hospital. Turns out it was just an allergic reaction to feta, she was sick for about another day, but made a full recovery. She decided to stick with booze after that little episode.
We partied so much and did so many things that were just...wrong. And we have a lot of it on film (yes, it was back when we developed and printed our work the old-school way.) Just about every apartment had it's own Wall of Shame. And if you were on it, you had to autograph the photo.
My first semester I also met Tristan. Oh, Tristan. He was sexy. Typical douchebag, but definitely sexy. Tall, dirty blond hair, bedroom eyes, amazing drummer. He was also the male slut of the school. (Come to find out it was an act, people just assumed he was. He recently told me that a lot of girls just gave him head, and he only slept with a select few.) We were formally introduced at a 311 show. I coordinated the outing for a big group of us, because by the second week of school, everyone knew how obsessed I was with 311. Tristan's roommate, Anthony, convinced him to go because Chad Sexton is one of the best drummers around. To this day, if asked, he will credit me for getting him into 311. After that concert we were inseparable, for the most part. The first time we had sex was a disaster though. It was after an impromptu party at my apartment. We were shitfaced, half-passed out in the hallway, because every available space was taken, even my own bed. We ended up fucking in the bathroom, me up on the sink and him standing in front of me. And because he was so tall, and I'm relatively short, it was quite difficult. It didn't last very long, and he shot a load all over my favorite pair of pants which were lying on the floor. I think we even succeeded in waking up my roommate and her boyfriend who were asleep in the next room.
The Black and White darkroom at school could be a very happenin' place. There was a CD player in there, and everyone always had to battle this one weirdo who insisted on playing Enya when the rest of us wanted to listen to Veruca Salt, Pink Floyd, Phish, Rusted Root, etc. I miss being able to create my art with my own hands the way I could with the developer, fixer, and wash. It was easy to spend hours working on one single print.
My second year was devoted to all color printing, but I couldn't give up black and white film, so the majority of my work was shot with black and white film and printed on color paper. The tones I was able to achieve were so much more appealing to me than just shooting and printing in color.
To just list some of the non school-related shit we did - blunt rides up and down Kelly Drive. Trips to the local diner to see how much we could freak out the waitress. Nights when those of us who lived in the same apartment building would all have dinner together. Lasagna Night. Shrimp Night. Margarita Night. Potluck Night. Getting high and going over to Tristan's only to have him call me out because all I could do was giggle at him. Hanging out with Bucket and Ryan, two of Jersey's finest.
Having people over to the apartment, only to get them fucked up and see how much it took to make them puke. Not intentionally of course, because it was always disgustingly messy. Our credo was, "The first night you stay at Jess & Dana's, you're gonna barf." And for some reason we took pride in that. I brought up some God-awful concoction my uncle came up with and our hippie friend Lindsey drank it all, only to be viciously sick and blame me for it, after I had warned her. My uncle LOVED that story.
Fuck, even those that could hang chose our place to be the one they got sick at. My own girls who came to visit me - Jenny, Lisa, Samantha, Jaime. One night Jenny thought she was dying. I laid in bed reading while she sat in the middle of the bedroom floor with her head hung over the trash can. I told her I wasn't taking her to the ER, so she had better puke. She really thought she was dying. "Just wait for it, hon, just wait for it. You'll feel so much better." And once she puked, she was fine. I knew what I was doing.
Wow, we were fucking stupid. But really we were just kids out on our own for the first time, trying to discover who we were, what made us tick, and our niche in the photography or graphic design arts. We had this one teacher for large format photograhy, Vlad, who everyone HATED in the beginning. We hated him because he made us strive for perfection. By the end of spring semester, our hate morphed into love for the instructor who would look at our work, tell us it sucked, and make us go back and do it all over again. It was a piece I did for his class that won in the Student Choice category in the school's annual photgraphy competition. When it was unveiled, Vlad was standing next to me and I turned to him and said (more like yelled) "Would you LOOK at that? That's MINE!" And then I stuck my tongue out at him. He just shook his head and laughed, which was his way of giving approval.
My second year at school I was much more subdued. I was going home every weekend because I just felt the need to be there. My parents were going through a very difficult time in their marriage, my mother was having major complications from knee surgery, and I was at a point in my friendship/relationship with my Ex where I was completely devastated. A lot of tears were shed that year, and it was very difficult to balance school and my personal issues. When it came time to start putting together my final portfolio, I was at a loss. My original idea was to do a series of portrait based on song lyrics, because I wanted to incorporate my love of music into my art. It didn't quite work out that way. After sitting down with my advisor, we determined that the best way for me to try and deal with my emotional turmoil was to capture it on film. All year I had been observing friends, family, and my home life through the lense of my camera anyway, so after sifting through my mountains of film and contact sheets (which are basically 8x10 sized index prints) I was able to give birth to my portfolio, and it was cathartic.
I may not have been the best photographer to receive my degree, but I was proud of myself. And I learned so many valuable lessons that I might have missed had I attended a tradtional four-year university. So I settled for experiencing "that kind of college life" through friends that went to the big schools. I've slept on the tiled floors of dorm rooms, showered in communal bathrooms where I had to wear flip flops, broke my toe while drunk on Bacardi 151 and left a trail of blood up three flights of stairs, went to various sporting events, etc. But on my own I learned not to be alone in a room with a guy who's consumed almost an entire bottle of vodka. (I owed Jess, Ryan and Bucket my life for helping to get me out of that situation.) How to handle my alternator crapping out on me right in the middle of the intersection of Broad and South Streets, to stay away from apartments whose tenants have an arrest warrant out for them, and to trust myself and only myself (with the exception of Jess and Lindsey) when shit hit the fan.

Oh, college. It was beautiful, it was dirty, it was rich.
My Masochistic Heart
If a person can be considered a masochist for physical pain, is it also possible to be one for emotional pain? I don't mean the type of humiliation and mindfucking that can go on during play, I mean heartache, rejection, things humans encounter every day in their own emotional world. Could it be the reason some of us just cannot seem to rid ourselves of things (or people) that are bad for us, that do nothing to benefit us? Instead of, or in addition to, being a pain slut, I guess I can say I'm a heartache slut. A glutton for depression and misery. Maybe it's why I go for the unattainable and let myself become attached...to the womanizers, the married ones, the ones with bedroom eyes and sinister smiles. I read somewhere that art does not come from happiness. So it's the artist/masochist/manic depressive in me that spills itself onto paper. If I go for the unattainable because there's no fear of getting trapped. And I keep doing it over and over again, savoring every punishment, every tear, every moment curled up in bed hiding under the covers and wishing I could stay there forever. It's the equivalent of having my hair pulled, of being smacked across the face and having my ass beat while being fucked at the same time.
But at least those bruises fade within a week or so. The emotional ones, the ones left on my soul, can last a lifetime. A bruised soul and a heart that's been carved out with a blunt and rusty knife can leave one scorned, guarded, and un-trusting of any new human being that enters one's life.
I guess when you're a masochist like me, you welcome every new creature with anticipation of any new sensation they may inflict upon you, regardless of the consequences. I pay no mind to danger signs, warnings, or red flags because it's "Fuck you all I'm doing it for ME." It's selfishness and self-destruction making mad, passionate love. The outcome is usually a nuclear warhead detonating within my ribcage, but it's not enough to stop me in my tracks. It's an intangible drug.
Go ahead baby, sweep me off my feet, make me feel like a Goddess, make a connection with me and stoke the fire between us. Then drop me like dead weight because deep down it's what I've been expecting all along.
He'll just inspire more writing and add to my cynicism. Another one to deliver a blow with a cat of nine tails. And I relish in it. I bite my lip until I feel the blood run down my chin because the pain feels so good. Do I understand it? No. Do I care? Not really. It gives me another reason to put my pen to the paper.
I want to tie him down and torture him until he begs for mercy; treat him like MY whore, MY little fucktoy. I want to tease his body until he's on the brink of insanity and his cock is so hard that he could drill cement with it. Why do I fantasize this way about this one particular man-child that I've already conquered? Because I'm not in love with him. There is no emotion involved. It is sex in its rawest form, animalistic, sweaty, messy. All he has to do is tease my pussy with the head of his cock and I'm on the brink of coming...
So what about the other ones? Why let the other ones dominate me, whether they know they're doing it or not? Why the ones I fall hard for? It's the men that, for a short period of time I think I could spend the rest of my life with, that I want to fuck me like I'm their bitch, like I'm their cockslut, and force me to go down on them so hard that my eyes water and my nose starts to run. It's these men whose hands I want to feel around my throat, that I want to tie ME up and torture me mercilessly.

We Pip women are cursed. Some might look at it as blessed, but only us women in the inner circle know it's a curse. We give and we give and we give of ourselves and expect nothing in return. But it gets to the point where we become exhausted. The point where we need someone to take care of us. I've watched two generations of Pip women exemplify this. I thought all I wanted was to give of myself, to the bearer, the keeper, but maybe it's time to turn the tables and break this curse.
Ha! To do that in a man's world? I might as well smoke my cigarette before I go to stand in front of the firing squad. Unbeknownst to the men lined up with their shotguns, it will take more than a shotgun shell full of gunpowder to kill me. I AM INVINCIBLE. I AM STRONG. I WILL FIGHT THE BATTLE, even if I have to do it on my own. My body may be temporary, but my spirit will live on, through my children, my children's children, on and on.
I'm not calling for all women on Earth to form a coup de tate, because it's not about rebellion. It's about finding your place, as a woman, in a fucked up world. Finding the place that makes you happy, whether it be barefoot and pregnant, the CEO of corporate America, or the girl behind the register at the grocery store. When I look around me, it seems that women have forgotten how to GLOW, how to shine from the inside out, and if I can do it in a short skirt and stiletto heels, even though I may be dying on the inside, anyone can do it. If my mother can do it, even as she was aware that her husband was running around on her, even as she watched both of her parents succumb to cancer, anyone can do it.
From what I've observed in my short lifetime, women are the problem solvers. The ones we go to when we are sick, and they make us scrambled eggs or pastina soup because those things can heal everything from a broken heart to a broken sternum.
It's really not men that cause the inner wars. If a woman shows her inner strength, if she emanates that Glow, she is automatically dubbed intimidating, and if she thinks with her Cunt, she's automatically dubbed a slut.
I'm not certain anymore of what the future holds for me, and it's a terrifying thought. I feel as though I'm back at square one: like I'm 18 years old, being forced to decide a major, thrown headfirst into the world of sex and relationships. Six months ago I had my life planned out. I had a partner, a good job, I was going to school to end up one day with a PharmD after my name. I saw the white picket fence clearly. And then I started feeling trapped. Trapped and scared of what it would be like ten years from now. Would I be content? Would I be happy? Would I wake up every day ready to face the world? When I realized that the answer to those questions was NO, I did what I had to do - I got out.
I needed to figure out who BELLA was. Not Bella, the other half of Brent. Not Bella, the student. Not Bella, the pharmacy tech. And I'm still working on it.
Will I be the Pip woman who finally breaks the curse? I feel as though I'm destined to find that happy medium, somewhere bewtween the good and dutiful housewife/mother and the powerful executive/artist/whatever.

Heavy Things, Part 1
I asked this question and feel the need to post the incredibly insightful answer.
How did you succeed in getting your *ish* together, and then keep it that way? I struggle everyday with the fact that I'm 26, still live at home and haven't decided whether or not I even want to get married. I work hard, pay my bills, write devoutly in my journal, and have the best family in world, but I am the black sheep. I feel as though because I'm not married, don't have a family, and think with my creative side more than anything, I'm considered an outsider. Since following you on Twitter, I consider you a strong female figure in my life, who's opinion I would greatly value. Any suggestions for snapping out of it?
Thank you for considering me to be a strong female figure in your life. That means the world to me, really. Well, to be honest with you I don't have my *ish* together. Yes I have my own home and a few books on the shelf, among other things...but there is so much more to life. There are still many things I need to do. I am a work in progress. I do not have all the answers. I am a human being, just like you. I am a woman. I get depressed, moody, sad, and distraught too. For me, it was losing my mother 3 years ago that was the catalyst and kick in the ass to get my shit together. I've always been a go-getter. I come from the hood and I've always had to struggle. In addition, I come from a legacy of strong women who would drop you off in the deep end of the pool of life and say "SWIM". That has made the difference. Stuggle, losing the people and things that were a security blanket, and much heartbreak has made me the teflon woman that I am. I never believed that I needed to be married to get ahead. Although I've been there and done that too. Marriage was not for me. It simply slowed down my speed. It was dead weight, so to speak. And unless you have yourself together and love yourself, you cannot bring anything to a relationship but a mess. Who gives a damn about what others think about you being creative? If you are creative...be creative. Who cares what others think? Most people are ignorant and completely delusional. Fly your own kite! You are only a black sheep if you think and say that you are. As long as you keep God first, everything will fall into place in divine time. Trust your heart.
